NASA Satellite Image Tropical Depression Hector Elongating, Weakening
Tropical Depression Hector is being torn apart in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. On Aug. 15, when NASA-NOAA’s Suomi NPP satellite flew overhead it captured a visible image of the storm as the final bulletin on the system was issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite captured a visible image of Hector that showed an elongated storm. The low level circulation center has elongated due to high southeasterly vertical wind shear and accelerating forward motion.
On Aug. 14 at 11 p.m. EDT (0300 UTC on Aug. 15), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) issued the final bulletin on Hector. JWTC reported the center of Hector was located near latitude 29.8 degrees north and longitude 170.1 degrees east. That’s about 1,317 nautical miles northwest of Johnston Island. The tropical depression was moving toward the northwest. Maximum sustained winds were near 34.5 mph (30 knots/55.5 kph).
Hector has become sub-tropical and is expected to continue decaying until it dissipates in the next day or two.
Aug. 14, 2018 - NASA Gets an Infrared View of Tropical Storm Hector
Infrared data from NASA's Aqua satellite provided forecasters with temperature data that showed the storm had two areas of strong convection.
On Aug. 14 at 10:20 a.m. EDT (1420 UTC) NASA's Aqua satellite found coldest temperatures of strongest thunderstorms in Tropical Storm Hector were as cold as or colder than minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 Celsius).

On Aug. 14 at 10:20 a.m. EDT (1420 UTC) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite analyzed Tropical Storm Hector's cloud top temperatures in infrared light. MODIS found cloud top temperatures of strongest thunderstorms were as cold as or colder than minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 Celsius) around the center, and a second area northwest of center near minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 45.5. degrees Celsius).
Cloud top temperatures that cold indicate strong storms that have the capability to create heavy rain.
At 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Hector was located near latitude 26.9 degrees north and longitude 174.5 degrees east. That's 1,079 nautical miles northwest of the Johnston Island Atoll. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center or JTWC said Hector is moving toward the west-northwest. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (35 knots/62 kph) with higher gusts.
The JTWC expects Hector to veer to the north while gradually weakening. The storm will become extra-tropical by Aug. 16.
Aug. 13, 2018 - NASA Tracks a Fragmented, Weaker Tropical Storm Hector into Northwestern Pacific
Tropical Storm Hector moved out of the Central Pacific Ocean and into the Northwestern Pacific Ocean in a much weaker state. NASA's Aqua satellite looked at cloud top temperatures in Hector, revealing fragmented thunderstorms within.
On Aug. 13 at 9:40 a.m. EDT (1340 UTC), the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured an infrared image of a fragmented Tropical Storm Hector.

On Aug. 13, Hector crossed the International Dateline into the Northwestern Pacific and at 9:40 a.m. EDT (1340 UTC), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured an infrared image of Hector. The image showed four small areas of strongest thunderstorms. They were around the center of circulation and west of the center. MODIS infrared data showed that some of those storms had cloud top temperatures as cold as minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 45.5 degrees Celsius), indicating they are high in the troposphere.
At 11 a.m. EDT (5 a.m. HST/1500 UTC), the Central Pacific Hurricane Center or CPHC noted that the center of Tropical Storm Hector was located near latitude 25.3 North, longitude 179.8 West. That's about 250 miles (400 km) southwest of Midway Island. Hector is moving toward the west-northwest near 17 mph (28 kph), and this general motion is expected to continue during the next couple of days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 kph) with higher gusts. Some additional weakening is forecast during the next two days. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1001 millibars.
The CPHC noted that ocean swells will still be a factor as Hector moves away from Hawaii. CPHC said "South and southeast swells generated by Hector will continue to produce elevated seas, with large breaking waves and strong currents this morning across portions of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, especially in the vicinity of Midway Atoll and Kure Atoll. These swells will gradually subside later today."
Aug. 10, 2018 - NASA Tracks Powerful Category 4 Hurricane Hector
NASA's Aqua satellite found very strong storms circling Hurricane Hector's eye on Aug. 10. Infrared data from NASA's Aqua satellite provided forecasters with temperature data that showed the strong storms towered high into the troposphere.
On Aug. 10 at 4:45 a.m. EDT (0845 UTC) NASA's Aqua satellite found coldest temperatures of strongest thunderstorms (red) in Hurricane Hector were as cold as or colder than minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 degrees Celsius).

NOAA's Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) noted that all warnings for Johnston Island are canceled. However, all interests in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, including Midway and Kure Atolls and the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument west of French Frigate Shoals, should monitor the progress of Hector. A Tropical Storm Watch may be issued for portions of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands later today or tonight. This does not include any of the main Hawaiian Islands.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center noted at 11 a.m. EDT (5 a.m. HST/1500 UTC) the center of Hurricane Hector was located near 17.7 degrees north latitude and 165.9 degrees west longitude. Hector's eye is about 575 miles (930 km) west-southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii and 245 miles (400 km) east-northeast of Johnston Island.
Hector is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph (26 kph), and this motion is expected to continue today. Hector is expected to turn toward the northwest from tonight through Saturday night. This forecast track keeps Hector's wind field far away from Johnston Island.
Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph (215 kph) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. There may be slight fluctuations in intensity today and tonight, but Hector will likely remain a powerful hurricane. Some gradual weakening is expected from Saturday (Aug. 11) through Saturday night.

Aug. 09, 2018 - NASA Sees Hector's Large Eye After Passing Hawaii
On Aug. 9 at 8:25 a.m. EDT (1225 UTC) NASA's Aqua satellite found coldest cloud top temperatures of strongest thunderstorms in Hurricane Hector were in its western quadrant. Temperatures were as cold as or colder than minus 70 degrees (red) Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 degrees Celsius).

Hurricane Hector continued to move west through the Central Pacific Ocean when NASA's Aqua satellite passed overhead and saw the storm's large eye that was a result of eyewall replacement.
Now that Hector has passed the Hawaiian Islands and is headed west, a tropical storm watch is in effect for Johnston Island. A tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours. On the forecast path, the center of Hector is expected to pass to the north of Johnston Island late Friday, Aug. 10.
At 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC) on Aug. 9 (11 p.m. HST on Aug. 8) NOAA's Central Pacific Hurricane Center said "Based on reflectivity data from the South Point WSR-88D radar om the Big Island, microwave images, and satellite data, it appeared that Hector went through an eyewall replacement cycle late this afternoon. Since this reorganization of the hurricane appears to be complete now, the eye of Hector has warmed and become much better defined in infrared satellite imagery during the past few hours."

Hector's Strength and Position
At 11 a.m. EDT (5 a.m. HST/1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near 16.6 degrees north latitude and 160.1 degrees west longitude. Hector was moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 kph) and this general motion is expected to continue through today. A gradual turn toward the west-northwest is expected from tonight through late Friday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph (195 kph) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Little change in strength is forecast through Friday night. The estimated minimum central pressure is 957 millibars.
Hawaii Dealing with Dangerous Surf
Swells generated by Hector should begin to impact Johnston Island tonight. This will likely produce large and dangerous waves along portions of the island from late tonight through Friday night.

Aug. 8, 2018 - NASA Sees Major Hurricane Hector Moving South of Hawaii
Hurricane Hector maintained its major hurricane status on Aug. 8 as NASA's Aqua satellite passed overhead. Infrared data from NASA's Aqua satellite provided forecasters with cloud top temperatures in Hector so they could pinpoint the strongest part of the storm.

NOAA's Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) noted today, Aug. 8 that a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Hawaii County. A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area later today.

Maximum sustained winds are near 125 mph (205 kph) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some slight weakening is forecast during the next couple of days. However, Hector will likely remain a powerful hurricane through Thursday night. The estimated minimum central pressure is 956 millibars.
The CPHC noted swells and tropical storm conditions would affect the Big Island today, Aug. 8. CPHC said "Swells generated by Hector will likely produce large and dangerous surf along southeast and east facing shores of the Big Island today. Large surf is also expected along east facing shores of Maui. Tropical storm conditions are expected across portions of the Big Island later today as the core of Hector passes to the south. The strongest winds are expected down the slope of the mountains, across elevated terrain, over headlands, and through gaps."

Aug. 07, 2018 - Hector Weakens But Remains Category 4 Hurricane
Hurricane Hector has weakened slightly but still remains a robust Category Four storm at present. At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 16.1 North, longitude 147.8 West. Hector is moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 km/h). This general motion is expected to continue through Thursday. On the forecast track, Hector is expected to pass roughly 165 miles south of the Big Island of Hawaii on Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph (215 km/h) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Satellite images show that Hector has degraded slightly since the previous advisory, with cooling temperatures noted within the slowly shrinking eye of the hurricane.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km).
The forecast track brings the center of Hector roughly 165 miles south of the Big Island as a strong category 2 hurricane on Wednesday, and given the proximity of the storm to the island, the Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect. Swells generated by Hector are expected to reach southeast and east facing shores of the Big Island and eastern Maui late today, likely becoming large and dangerous by late tonight and Wednesday. In addition, tropical storm force winds are possible across Hawaii County late tonight and Wednesday.

Aug. 06, 2018 - NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP Satellite Gets Night-time and Infrared Views of Hurricane Hector
Hurricane Hector was impressive in night-time and infrared imagery taken from NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite when it strengthened into a major hurricane. Hector recently crossed from the Eastern Pacific into the Central Pacific Ocean and strengthened into a Category 4 Hurricane.
NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite provided forecasters with a night-time and infrared look at Hurricane Hector's clouds on Aug. 4 at 0300 UTC (Aug. 3 at 11 p.m. EDT) when Hurricane Hector became a major Category 3 hurricane. Hurricane Hector has maintained its strength with sustained winds of 120 mph and an estimated central pressure of 962 millibars.
William Straka III of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Madison, made the images. Straka said, "Suomi NPP had an almost nadir overpass of Hector, which meant that one could see the features of the storm fairly well. Not surprisingly for a major storm, there was a well-defined eye that could be seen, along with the associated tropospheric gravity waves due to the intense convection in the I05, 11um channel. The last quarter moon (53% illumination) also provided enough moonlight to see convection in the feeder bands along with the cirrus blow off and the well-defined eye from the storm. If one zooms in to the eye, as seen in the images attached, one can clearly see that it is very well defined, with open ocean being seen."

The VIIRS instrument on the Suomi NPP satellite flew over Category 3 Hurricane Hector on Aug. 4 at 0300 UTC (Aug. 3 at 11 p.m. EDT). Cloud top temperatures were near 190 Kelvin/-117.7F/-83.5C in the in all quadrant except the north.

At 5 a.m. EDT 11 p.m. (0900 UTC/or 11 p.m. HST time on Aug. 5), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 14.9 North, longitude 140.6 West. That's about 1,010 miles (1,625 km) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii.
Maximum sustained winds are near 140 mph (220 kph) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are expected tonight and Monday, followed by gradual weakening Monday night through Wednesday, Aug. 8. The estimated minimum central pressure is 947 millibars.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) said that Hector is moving toward the west near 15 mph (24 kph) and a motion toward the west-northwest at an increased forward speed is expected through Tuesday, followed by a westward motion Tuesday night through Friday, Aug. 10.

Aug. 03, 2018 - NASA Finds a Compact Center in Hurricane Hector
Hurricane Hector has a small, tight center surrounded by strong storms. Infrared satellite imagery provides temperature data, and when NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Hector the coldest cloud tops circling the center were compact.
Cloud top temperatures determine strength of the thunderstorms that make up a tropical cyclone. The colder the cloud top, the stronger the uplift in the storm that helps thunderstorm development. Basically, infrared data helps determine where the most powerful storms are within a tropical cyclone.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard Aqua provided that infrared data on Aug. 3 at 5:50 a.m. EDT (0950 UTC). MODIS data showed the strongest thunderstorms were as cold or colder than minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 degrees Celsius). NASA research indicates very cold cloud tops with the potential to generate very heavy rainfall.
The compact center was confirmed by the National Hurricane Center or NHC in their advisory on Aug. 3 at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC) when they noted "Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km)."
At that time, the eye of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 14.0 degrees north and longitude 127.8 degrees west. That's about 1,320 miles (2,125 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico. The estimated minimum central pressure is 975 millibars.
Hector was moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h). This general motion is expected to continue through the weekend. Maximum sustained winds are near 105 mph (165 kph) with higher gusts.
The NHC said that "Some gradual strengthening is forecast, and Hector is expected to become a major hurricane within the next day or two."

Aug. 02, 2018 - NASA's Terra Satellite finds Powerful Storms in Hurricane Hector
NASA's Terra satellite analyzed Hurricane Hector in infrared light to find the strongest parts of the storm. Overnight from Aug. 1 to Aug. 2, Hector strengthened into a hurricane in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
On Aug. 2 at 2:15 a.m. EDT (0615 UTC) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite analyzed Hector's cloud top temperatures in infrared light. The higher the storm, the stronger the uplift, and likely the stronger the storm. By analyzing a storm in Infrared light, scientists can tell cloud top temperatures that give clues about the location of the highest, coldest and strongest storms.
MODIS found cloud top temperatures of strongest thunderstorms were as cold as or colder than minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 62.2 Celsius) around the small eye. Cloud top temperatures that cold indicate strong storms that have the capability to create heavy rain.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted at 11 a.m. EDT (100 UTC) on Aug. 2, the eye of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 14.2 degrees north, longitude 124.6 degrees west. That's about 1,135 miles (1,825 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico. The estimated minimum central pressure is 987 millibars. Hector is moving toward the west near 14 mph (22 kph), and this general motion is expected to continue for the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 85 mph (140 kph) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next few days.
NHC forecaster Blake noted "Hector has turned westward and accelerated, now moving 12 knots. A large subtropical ridge [elongated area of high pressure] is forecast to build westward over the next several days, keeping the cyclone on this general course into the Central Pacific."

Aug. 01, 2018 - NASA's GPM Sees Tropical Storm Hector Forming
Powerful convective storms were wrapping around the western side of the deepening tropical low's center of circulation when GPM observed Hector on July 31 at 1:40 p.m. PDT (2040 UTC). GPM found rain in some of these storms was falling at a rate of almost 198 mm (7.8 inches) per hour. Storm tops in that area were found by GPM to reach heights above 12 km (7.4 miles).

Tropical storm Hector was forming in the eastern Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico when the GPM core observatory satellite passed over on July 31.
The Global Precipitation Measurement mission, or GPM, core satellite observed Hector on July 31, 2018, at 1:40 p.m. PDT (2040 UTC). GPM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA.
At that time GPM passed overhead, Hector's maximum sustained winds were estimated to be about 30 knots (34.5 mph). Powerful convective storms were wrapping around the western side of the deepening tropical low's center of circulation. GPM's Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) instrument collected data showing that rain in some of these storms was falling at a rate of almost 198 mm (7.8 inches) per hour.
At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the GPM satellite's radar data (DPR Ku Band) were used to create a 3D structure of precipitation within the forming tropical storm. This cross-section view, looking toward the northwest, showed that powerful convective storms to the west of the forming tropical storm's center of circulation contained very intense downpours. Radar echoes measuring over 57dBZ were returned to the satellite. Storm tops in that area were found by GPM to reach heights above 12 km (7.4 miles).
At 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC) on Aug.1, the center of Tropical Storm Hector was located near 13.8 degrees north latitude and 120.4 degrees west longitude. That's about 930 miles (1,500 km) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico.
The National Hurricane Center said that Hector was moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph (20 kph), and this general motion is expected today. A turn toward the west is forecast tomorrow, with the westward motion likely lasting a few days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 45 mph (75 kph) with higher gusts.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts that Hector will move west-northwesterly. Despite slightly increasing vertical shear, Hector is predicted to become a hurricane as it moves toward the Central Pacific. The NHC predicts that Hector will become even more powerful early next week with maximum sustained winds reaching 80 knots (92 mph).

On Aug. 14 at 11 p.m. EDT (0300 UTC on Aug. 15), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) issued the final bulletin on Hector. JWTC reported the center of Hector was located near latitude 29.8 degrees north and longitude 170.1 degrees east. That’s about 1,317 nautical miles northwest of Johnston Island. The tropical depression was moving toward the northwest. Maximum sustained winds were near 34.5 mph (30 knots/55.5 kph).
Hector has become sub-tropical and is expected to continue decaying until it dissipates in the next day or two.
Aug. 14, 2018 - NASA Gets an Infrared View of Tropical Storm Hector
Infrared data from NASA's Aqua satellite provided forecasters with temperature data that showed the storm had two areas of strong convection.
On Aug. 14 at 10:20 a.m. EDT (1420 UTC) NASA's Aqua satellite found coldest temperatures of strongest thunderstorms in Tropical Storm Hector were as cold as or colder than minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 Celsius).

On Aug. 14 at 10:20 a.m. EDT (1420 UTC) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite analyzed Tropical Storm Hector's cloud top temperatures in infrared light. MODIS found cloud top temperatures of strongest thunderstorms were as cold as or colder than minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 Celsius) around the center, and a second area northwest of center near minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 45.5. degrees Celsius).
Cloud top temperatures that cold indicate strong storms that have the capability to create heavy rain.
At 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Hector was located near latitude 26.9 degrees north and longitude 174.5 degrees east. That's 1,079 nautical miles northwest of the Johnston Island Atoll. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center or JTWC said Hector is moving toward the west-northwest. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (35 knots/62 kph) with higher gusts.
The JTWC expects Hector to veer to the north while gradually weakening. The storm will become extra-tropical by Aug. 16.
Aug. 13, 2018 - NASA Tracks a Fragmented, Weaker Tropical Storm Hector into Northwestern Pacific
Tropical Storm Hector moved out of the Central Pacific Ocean and into the Northwestern Pacific Ocean in a much weaker state. NASA's Aqua satellite looked at cloud top temperatures in Hector, revealing fragmented thunderstorms within.
On Aug. 13 at 9:40 a.m. EDT (1340 UTC), the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured an infrared image of a fragmented Tropical Storm Hector.

On Aug. 13, Hector crossed the International Dateline into the Northwestern Pacific and at 9:40 a.m. EDT (1340 UTC), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured an infrared image of Hector. The image showed four small areas of strongest thunderstorms. They were around the center of circulation and west of the center. MODIS infrared data showed that some of those storms had cloud top temperatures as cold as minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 45.5 degrees Celsius), indicating they are high in the troposphere.
At 11 a.m. EDT (5 a.m. HST/1500 UTC), the Central Pacific Hurricane Center or CPHC noted that the center of Tropical Storm Hector was located near latitude 25.3 North, longitude 179.8 West. That's about 250 miles (400 km) southwest of Midway Island. Hector is moving toward the west-northwest near 17 mph (28 kph), and this general motion is expected to continue during the next couple of days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 kph) with higher gusts. Some additional weakening is forecast during the next two days. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1001 millibars.
The CPHC noted that ocean swells will still be a factor as Hector moves away from Hawaii. CPHC said "South and southeast swells generated by Hector will continue to produce elevated seas, with large breaking waves and strong currents this morning across portions of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, especially in the vicinity of Midway Atoll and Kure Atoll. These swells will gradually subside later today."
Aug. 10, 2018 - NASA Tracks Powerful Category 4 Hurricane Hector
NASA's Aqua satellite found very strong storms circling Hurricane Hector's eye on Aug. 10. Infrared data from NASA's Aqua satellite provided forecasters with temperature data that showed the strong storms towered high into the troposphere.
On Aug. 10 at 4:45 a.m. EDT (0845 UTC) NASA's Aqua satellite found coldest temperatures of strongest thunderstorms (red) in Hurricane Hector were as cold as or colder than minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 degrees Celsius).

NOAA's Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) noted that all warnings for Johnston Island are canceled. However, all interests in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, including Midway and Kure Atolls and the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument west of French Frigate Shoals, should monitor the progress of Hector. A Tropical Storm Watch may be issued for portions of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands later today or tonight. This does not include any of the main Hawaiian Islands.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center noted at 11 a.m. EDT (5 a.m. HST/1500 UTC) the center of Hurricane Hector was located near 17.7 degrees north latitude and 165.9 degrees west longitude. Hector's eye is about 575 miles (930 km) west-southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii and 245 miles (400 km) east-northeast of Johnston Island.
Hector is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph (26 kph), and this motion is expected to continue today. Hector is expected to turn toward the northwest from tonight through Saturday night. This forecast track keeps Hector's wind field far away from Johnston Island.
Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph (215 kph) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. There may be slight fluctuations in intensity today and tonight, but Hector will likely remain a powerful hurricane. Some gradual weakening is expected from Saturday (Aug. 11) through Saturday night.

Aug. 09, 2018 - NASA Sees Hector's Large Eye After Passing Hawaii
On Aug. 9 at 8:25 a.m. EDT (1225 UTC) NASA's Aqua satellite found coldest cloud top temperatures of strongest thunderstorms in Hurricane Hector were in its western quadrant. Temperatures were as cold as or colder than minus 70 degrees (red) Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 degrees Celsius).

Hurricane Hector continued to move west through the Central Pacific Ocean when NASA's Aqua satellite passed overhead and saw the storm's large eye that was a result of eyewall replacement.
Now that Hector has passed the Hawaiian Islands and is headed west, a tropical storm watch is in effect for Johnston Island. A tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours. On the forecast path, the center of Hector is expected to pass to the north of Johnston Island late Friday, Aug. 10.
At 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC) on Aug. 9 (11 p.m. HST on Aug. 8) NOAA's Central Pacific Hurricane Center said "Based on reflectivity data from the South Point WSR-88D radar om the Big Island, microwave images, and satellite data, it appeared that Hector went through an eyewall replacement cycle late this afternoon. Since this reorganization of the hurricane appears to be complete now, the eye of Hector has warmed and become much better defined in infrared satellite imagery during the past few hours."

Cloud top temperatures that cold indicate strong storms that have the capability to create heavy rain, so the heaviest rain was likely falling on Hector's western side.
Hector's Strength and Position
At 11 a.m. EDT (5 a.m. HST/1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near 16.6 degrees north latitude and 160.1 degrees west longitude. Hector was moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 kph) and this general motion is expected to continue through today. A gradual turn toward the west-northwest is expected from tonight through late Friday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph (195 kph) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Little change in strength is forecast through Friday night. The estimated minimum central pressure is 957 millibars.
Hawaii Dealing with Dangerous Surf
Swells generated by Hector should begin to impact Johnston Island tonight. This will likely produce large and dangerous waves along portions of the island from late tonight through Friday night.

Aug. 8, 2018 - NASA Sees Major Hurricane Hector Moving South of Hawaii
Hurricane Hector maintained its major hurricane status on Aug. 8 as NASA's Aqua satellite passed overhead. Infrared data from NASA's Aqua satellite provided forecasters with cloud top temperatures in Hector so they could pinpoint the strongest part of the storm.

NOAA's Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) noted today, Aug. 8 that a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Hawaii County. A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area later today.

That's about 240 miles (390 km) south-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Hector is moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 kph), and this motion is expected to continue through Thursday night, Aug. 9.
Maximum sustained winds are near 125 mph (205 kph) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some slight weakening is forecast during the next couple of days. However, Hector will likely remain a powerful hurricane through Thursday night. The estimated minimum central pressure is 956 millibars.
The CPHC noted swells and tropical storm conditions would affect the Big Island today, Aug. 8. CPHC said "Swells generated by Hector will likely produce large and dangerous surf along southeast and east facing shores of the Big Island today. Large surf is also expected along east facing shores of Maui. Tropical storm conditions are expected across portions of the Big Island later today as the core of Hector passes to the south. The strongest winds are expected down the slope of the mountains, across elevated terrain, over headlands, and through gaps."
Interests on Johnston Island should monitor the progress of Hector.

Satellite images show that Hector has degraded slightly since the previous advisory, with cooling temperatures noted within the slowly shrinking eye of the hurricane.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km).
The forecast track brings the center of Hector roughly 165 miles south of the Big Island as a strong category 2 hurricane on Wednesday, and given the proximity of the storm to the island, the Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect. Swells generated by Hector are expected to reach southeast and east facing shores of the Big Island and eastern Maui late today, likely becoming large and dangerous by late tonight and Wednesday. In addition, tropical storm force winds are possible across Hawaii County late tonight and Wednesday.

Aug. 06, 2018 - NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP Satellite Gets Night-time and Infrared Views of Hurricane Hector
Hurricane Hector was impressive in night-time and infrared imagery taken from NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite when it strengthened into a major hurricane. Hector recently crossed from the Eastern Pacific into the Central Pacific Ocean and strengthened into a Category 4 Hurricane.
NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite provided forecasters with a night-time and infrared look at Hurricane Hector's clouds on Aug. 4 at 0300 UTC (Aug. 3 at 11 p.m. EDT) when Hurricane Hector became a major Category 3 hurricane. Hurricane Hector has maintained its strength with sustained winds of 120 mph and an estimated central pressure of 962 millibars.
William Straka III of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Madison, made the images. Straka said, "Suomi NPP had an almost nadir overpass of Hector, which meant that one could see the features of the storm fairly well. Not surprisingly for a major storm, there was a well-defined eye that could be seen, along with the associated tropospheric gravity waves due to the intense convection in the I05, 11um channel. The last quarter moon (53% illumination) also provided enough moonlight to see convection in the feeder bands along with the cirrus blow off and the well-defined eye from the storm. If one zooms in to the eye, as seen in the images attached, one can clearly see that it is very well defined, with open ocean being seen."

The VIIRS instrument on the Suomi NPP satellite flew over Category 3 Hurricane Hector on Aug. 4 at 0300 UTC (Aug. 3 at 11 p.m. EDT). Cloud top temperatures were near 190 Kelvin/-117.7F/-83.5C in the in all quadrant except the north.

At 5 a.m. EDT 11 p.m. (0900 UTC/or 11 p.m. HST time on Aug. 5), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 14.9 North, longitude 140.6 West. That's about 1,010 miles (1,625 km) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii.
Maximum sustained winds are near 140 mph (220 kph) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are expected tonight and Monday, followed by gradual weakening Monday night through Wednesday, Aug. 8. The estimated minimum central pressure is 947 millibars.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) said that Hector is moving toward the west near 15 mph (24 kph) and a motion toward the west-northwest at an increased forward speed is expected through Tuesday, followed by a westward motion Tuesday night through Friday, Aug. 10.

Aug. 03, 2018 - NASA Finds a Compact Center in Hurricane Hector
Hurricane Hector has a small, tight center surrounded by strong storms. Infrared satellite imagery provides temperature data, and when NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Hector the coldest cloud tops circling the center were compact.
Cloud top temperatures determine strength of the thunderstorms that make up a tropical cyclone. The colder the cloud top, the stronger the uplift in the storm that helps thunderstorm development. Basically, infrared data helps determine where the most powerful storms are within a tropical cyclone.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard Aqua provided that infrared data on Aug. 3 at 5:50 a.m. EDT (0950 UTC). MODIS data showed the strongest thunderstorms were as cold or colder than minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 56.6 degrees Celsius). NASA research indicates very cold cloud tops with the potential to generate very heavy rainfall.
The compact center was confirmed by the National Hurricane Center or NHC in their advisory on Aug. 3 at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC) when they noted "Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km)."
At that time, the eye of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 14.0 degrees north and longitude 127.8 degrees west. That's about 1,320 miles (2,125 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico. The estimated minimum central pressure is 975 millibars.
Hector was moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h). This general motion is expected to continue through the weekend. Maximum sustained winds are near 105 mph (165 kph) with higher gusts.
The NHC said that "Some gradual strengthening is forecast, and Hector is expected to become a major hurricane within the next day or two."

Aug. 02, 2018 - NASA's Terra Satellite finds Powerful Storms in Hurricane Hector
NASA's Terra satellite analyzed Hurricane Hector in infrared light to find the strongest parts of the storm. Overnight from Aug. 1 to Aug. 2, Hector strengthened into a hurricane in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
On Aug. 2 at 2:15 a.m. EDT (0615 UTC) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite analyzed Hector's cloud top temperatures in infrared light. The higher the storm, the stronger the uplift, and likely the stronger the storm. By analyzing a storm in Infrared light, scientists can tell cloud top temperatures that give clues about the location of the highest, coldest and strongest storms.
MODIS found cloud top temperatures of strongest thunderstorms were as cold as or colder than minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 62.2 Celsius) around the small eye. Cloud top temperatures that cold indicate strong storms that have the capability to create heavy rain.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted at 11 a.m. EDT (100 UTC) on Aug. 2, the eye of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 14.2 degrees north, longitude 124.6 degrees west. That's about 1,135 miles (1,825 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico. The estimated minimum central pressure is 987 millibars. Hector is moving toward the west near 14 mph (22 kph), and this general motion is expected to continue for the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 85 mph (140 kph) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next few days.
NHC forecaster Blake noted "Hector has turned westward and accelerated, now moving 12 knots. A large subtropical ridge [elongated area of high pressure] is forecast to build westward over the next several days, keeping the cyclone on this general course into the Central Pacific."

Aug. 01, 2018 - NASA's GPM Sees Tropical Storm Hector Forming
Powerful convective storms were wrapping around the western side of the deepening tropical low's center of circulation when GPM observed Hector on July 31 at 1:40 p.m. PDT (2040 UTC). GPM found rain in some of these storms was falling at a rate of almost 198 mm (7.8 inches) per hour. Storm tops in that area were found by GPM to reach heights above 12 km (7.4 miles).

Tropical storm Hector was forming in the eastern Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico when the GPM core observatory satellite passed over on July 31.
The Global Precipitation Measurement mission, or GPM, core satellite observed Hector on July 31, 2018, at 1:40 p.m. PDT (2040 UTC). GPM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA.
At that time GPM passed overhead, Hector's maximum sustained winds were estimated to be about 30 knots (34.5 mph). Powerful convective storms were wrapping around the western side of the deepening tropical low's center of circulation. GPM's Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) instrument collected data showing that rain in some of these storms was falling at a rate of almost 198 mm (7.8 inches) per hour.
At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the GPM satellite's radar data (DPR Ku Band) were used to create a 3D structure of precipitation within the forming tropical storm. This cross-section view, looking toward the northwest, showed that powerful convective storms to the west of the forming tropical storm's center of circulation contained very intense downpours. Radar echoes measuring over 57dBZ were returned to the satellite. Storm tops in that area were found by GPM to reach heights above 12 km (7.4 miles).
At 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC) on Aug.1, the center of Tropical Storm Hector was located near 13.8 degrees north latitude and 120.4 degrees west longitude. That's about 930 miles (1,500 km) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico.
The National Hurricane Center said that Hector was moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph (20 kph), and this general motion is expected today. A turn toward the west is forecast tomorrow, with the westward motion likely lasting a few days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 45 mph (75 kph) with higher gusts.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts that Hector will move west-northwesterly. Despite slightly increasing vertical shear, Hector is predicted to become a hurricane as it moves toward the Central Pacific. The NHC predicts that Hector will become even more powerful early next week with maximum sustained winds reaching 80 knots (92 mph).

GPM found rain in some of these storms was falling at a rate of almost 198 mm (7.8 inches) per hour. Storm tops in that area were found by GPM to reach heights above 12 km (7.4 miles).
